<![CDATA[The Ides of March]]> This has gone on long enough. As of March 15, 2009, StudioJ will be changing its browser support options and dropping automatic support of Internet Explorer 6.

All projects commenced on or after that date will incur an additional fee if IE6 support is requested. This accurately reflects the very large overhead IE6 places on site development.

Why? IE6 is now over 7 years old. In computing terms, it's ancient. Not only has it been succeeded by IE7 and very soon IE8, it was designed for a web computing paradigm that is now obsolete. Despite this, perhaps in excess of 25% of web users are still using IE6 to browse the web.

IE6 is outdated, flawed, a gigantic headache to work with, and needs to die. That is why we're not throwing support for it in for free anymore.

More information will be released when we publish our quote generator; however we are currently looking at around 10% surcharge.

<![CDATA[Java]]> I've been learning Java this past 9 months, and I'm really starting to enjoy it. I'm looking forward to getting some experience using it in web development soon, but to this point I've only built console applications, the latest of which was a text editor! To this point I've enjoyed the similarities between Java and C#, but as we progress it looks like I'll have my work cut out for me. I'll keep you posted on how this goes.

Java does a good job with abstract classes and inheritance in general, and so far I've found it to be more straight forward than C#, and I'm glad to be rid of code like:

myLabel.Text = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Some global var"]

Although PHP has $_Globals, I suppose.

<![CDATA[Windows Vista SP1]]> Well, things seem to have gone swimmingly installing Vista SP1. Initially I was a bit worried as I had heard a number of complaints that it caused Blue Screen of Death errors during install, however nothing of the sort seems to have occured in my case.

I haven't yet had a chance to extensively test any improvements made, but so far all is going well.
